The Race Card Bites

In 2002, President George W. Bush nominated the Hon. Charles Pickering for a seat on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Charles Pickering raised his family in Laurel, Mississippi. Laurel was also home to one of, if not the, most vicious Klan organizations, the White Knights of the KKK. It was lead by Imperial Wizard Sam Bowers. Bowers was behind the murders of civil rights workers Andrew Goodman, Michael Schwerner and James Chaney.

In 1963, Charles Pickering was elected prosecuting attorney for Jones County. He didn’t think about his personal safety or his political career when he hounded, exposed and testified against Sam Bowers and the White Knights. He was thinking about the world in which his children were living. He was thinking that it was the right thing to do.

In 1969, districts all across Mississippi created special all-white “academies” as a means of bypassing the newly passed desegregation laws. Charles Pickering’s son Chip was starting first grade that year in Laurel Mississippi. Charles Pickering and a group of community leaders kept these “academies” out of Laurel. Chip Pickering, as well as all four of the children of Charles Pickering graduated from local, integrated public high school.

Charles Pickering is held in high regard in the black community; so high, in fact, that James Charles Evers (brother of Medgar Evers) took on the NAACP’s Clarence McGee:

“You know that Charles Pickering was the man that helped us break the Ku Klux Klan?”

“Did you also know that Charles Pickering is the man who helped integrate his—his churches?”

This is what Harry Reid (D-NV), presently Majority Leader in the U.S. Senate had to say about the Hon. Charles Pickering on the floor of the Senate:

“There appears to be a “pattern here that this administration is not concerned about women and other minorities.”

Sometimes, Sen. Reid, when your words come back to bite you in the ass, you get bitten on both cheeks. It couldn’t happen to a more deserving individual:
